Jack Nicklaus has putting tip for amateurs that hardly anyone on the PGA Tour actually does

Jack Nicklaus is one of the best golfers to ever play the game but few realise just how great of a putter he was, which makes any tips he gives out worth listening to.

Nicklaus is known for his 18 major championships and being the best golfer ever, alongside Tiger Woods.

However, while many will often bring up Tiger’s ability to make putts under pressure and get him over the line, Nicklaus is often forgotten about.

But in reality, Nicklaus was absolutely one of the best putters to ever play the game and speaking to CBS at the Memorial Tournament, he revealed a few of his secrets.

Jack Nicklaus gives his putting secrets to amateurs

When having it put to him that he was the greatest pressure putter of all time and asked to give some tips, Nicklaus spoke on the mindset he had and crucially, his technique which hardly anyone else does.

“Just making it,” Nicklaus said. “Absolutely [it’s a mindset]. I mean I remember that when I made a putt in 1959 to win it one up in a 36-hole final, I then knew I could make a putt if I needed. That was the biggest putt I ever made in my life.

“I didn’t have to wait for the next one. What it comes to is, ‘I’ve got to make this putt, no ifs buts or maybes’. And I made most of them, by doing that.

“My putting stroke was about grip pressure, uniformed grip pressure throughout the stroke. But it depends on the greens. Faster they were, I’d be softer. Slower they were, a little firmer I’d be with grip pressure. As long as the fundamentals are there, it’s then just make the putt.

“But I also putted, which not many people putt this way, I putted the same way I played and tried to eliminate left. Starting to the left of the hole and working back to it. So if I worked under the ball, I figured I eliminated that. So if you’re aiming left edge and know you’re moving it to the right, you’ve got four and a quarter inches to hit it in. Same as a fairway, a hook or slice, aim it left you’ve got 40 yards to fade it.”

When Jack Nicklaus made one of the most ridiculous putts of his career at age 75

Sometimes in golf, you’ve just got that magic touch and Jack Nicklaus is one of those players.

However, few could have scripted the moment he produced alongside Jonny Miller at the 2016 Senior PGA Championship.

At the ripe old age of 75, Nicklaus looked on as Miller dithered over making a putt from off the green, over some slopes, and towards the pin.

But in true Nicklaus fashion, he walked over, asked Miller if he wanted him to show him how to hit it, and subsequently made the putt.

In all the great moments in Jack Nicklaus’ career, this was arguably one of the greatest.

Now age 85, golf fans worldwide would love one more moment like this from the ‘Golden Bear’ and it would just about round off the greatest golf career we’ve ever seen.
