Jannik Sinner withdraws from US Open mixed doubles

As was expected, world no. 1 Jannik Sinner will not compete in today’s US Open mixed doubles event. The Italian retired against Carlos Alcaraz while trailing 5-0 in Monday’s Cincinnati Masters final.

As he announced, he will require a couple of days off the court to overcome illness that has been bothering him since Sunday. Jannik should have played alongside Katerina Siniakova against Belinda Bencic and Alexander Zverev.

However, that turned into a mission impossible only 24 hours after leaving the court in Cincinnati heartbroken following a setback. The 24-year-old will turn his focus to recovery and preparation for his singles duties at the US Open.

Jannik experienced flu symptoms and high fever on Sunday. He hoped to recover by Monday, but things only got worse over night. The four-time Major winner knew he would not be able to challenge Alcaraz.

However, he stepped onto the court for the title clash at 3 p.m., eager to at least play for the spectators and suffer a decent loss. However, the world’s best player struggled in warm and humid conditions from the opening point.

Carlos took all five games in 23 minutes, and Jannik decided to end his misery and preserve his body ahead of the final Major event of the season. The decision to skip the mixed doubles event in new York was the only logical solution.

The Italian prioritizes health and recovery ahead of demanding best-of-five duties in New York. Despite the outcome, Sinner was happy with his Cincinnati Masters campaign.

He reached another final and realized what he has to improve to chase his second consecutive US Open crown.
