Jerry Jones doesn’t mince words on Cowboys underachieving as Dak Prescott-led team officially crashes out of playoffs after 34-17 loss vs. Chargers

Jerry Jones doesn

Jerry Jones’ Dallas Cowboys are officially eliminated from playoff contention after losing 34-17 to the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 16. This defeat resulted in a three-game losing skid as the franchise goes another year without the chance to compete for the Super Bowl.

After the game, Jerry Jones shared his unfiltered take on his team’s disappointing 2025 season. He said that everyone “underachieved” according to the expectations that they had set for themselves. However, the Cowboys owner also highlighted some positive takeaways from their on-field performances this season.

“Yes, from what we expected, from what we thought, absolutely. We did. We all underachieved. Really,” Jones said. ” The fact we’re not in the playoffs, it says that for you. But I thought we’ve done some things out there that frankly we can carry forawrd with us. It’s always the case that there’s some positive things.

“The question is, can we make some changes where we need to. That’s pretty, be pretty thorough and multiple of a lot of multiplication there with the way we played this year. But still, they’re positive things, there always are. And that’s one of the things about going into coaches meeting and looking at film. If you don’t look out, you’ll see positive things when you really should be more critical to the negative. And I think you have to do that to play the game and be involed in the game.”

Jerry Jones made some revamps to the roster this season with the hopes of qualifying for the playoffs. He traded Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers while improving their defense by acquiring players like Quinnen Williams and Logan Wilson.

Against the Chargers on Sunday, quarterback Dak Prescott completed 21 of 30 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns.

Jerry Jones gets real about DC Matt Eberflus’ future with the Cowboys

Jerry Jones hired Matt Eberflus as the Cowboys’ new defensive coordinator back in January. However, the team’s defense has been struggling throughout the season. They are ranked No.29 in terms of total defense, averaging 374.9 defensive yards while allowing 50 touchdowns

After the Week 16 loss to the Chargers, Jones came forward to talk about Matt Eberflus’ future with the franchise.

“I might not couch it as difficult,” Jones said. “(Evaluating him is) certainly something that we’ll have to do. And that is to look at the entire year and look at what our options are, and h0w to correct it so we’re not here at the same time next year.

“Obviously, the target is on him because of our statistical, as well as actual play on the defensive side of the ball, but that goes with it.”

The Cowboys are placed second in the NFC East behind the Eagles with a 6-8-1 record. They next face the Commanders on Thursday at 1 p.m. ET.
