John Daly once revealed the reason why Tiger Woods was fined even more than him by the PGA Tour

John Daly is known as Wild Thing for a reason, with the two-time major champion undoubtedly one of the greatest characters the game of golf has ever seen.

Few careers in sport have been more eventful than that of John Daly. The 59-year-old won two of the sport’s four biggest events. But he also never played in a Ryder Cup or a Presidents Cup.

Who makes your Mount Rushmore of active golfers?

Any massive names missing out?

“I would say Bobby Jones, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, and the last one’s just so brutal to decide on. I love Gary Player. I love Phil Mickelson. But, I think I have to give it to Arnold Palmer. I mean, it’s real tough to keep that guy off the Mount Rushmore of golf.”

Daly was unquestionably one of the most talented players of his generation. Tiger Woods admitted that Daly had more natural ability than he did.

But unfortunately, he got himself in trouble on a few occasions throughout his career.

Why Tiger Woods was fined more than John Daly during their PGA Tour careers

Daly was never a likely candidate to be poster boy for a PGA Tour that has all sorts of corporate sponsors to keep happy.

However, it seems that Daly was not the most fined player on tour during his career.

Speaking to Golf Digest in 2005, Daly explained how Tiger Woods reacted when he told him just how much he had paid out over the years.

“I don’t think I have the record,” he said.

“I was talking with Tiger recently. I wanna say I’m up around $180,000 to $200,000, but he said I have a long way to go to catch him. I was leading in the late ’90s, but I haven’t been fined since 2000, I don’t think. Tiger gets fined for swearing on TV, but he’s got a microphone in his face every shot. A lot of guys are using the same language, but they’re not on TV.”

How Tiger Woods got himself into trouble after the 2009 Bridgestone Invitational

The PGA Tour does not publicise fines. However, there was one incident in 2009 which looked set to lead to the then 14-time major champion being punished.

As reported by Golf Digest, Woods was set to receive a fine after criticising an official’s decision to put him and Padraig Harrington on the clock during the final round of the Bridgestone Invitational.

What is the one golf rule you would change if you had the opportunity?

Woods went on to win – and felt that the official’s actions were pivotal. He suggested that Harrington suffered due to being rushed.

Clearly, the prospect of being fined does not impact Woods when he feels that he needs to speak his mind.
