Jordan Spieth once told Jack Nicklaus to his face that he hated the 16th hole at Muirfield Village

Jack Nicklaus designed the magnificent course at Muirfield Village Golf Club way back in 1974.

However, the 16th is one hole at Muirfield Village that Nicklaus has changed on numerous occasions throughout the years.

Nicklaus has always sought out advice from PGA Tour players about ways in which he can improve the course at Muirfield Village.

Who will have more majors? 🏆

And Jordan Spieth is someone who has always given Nicklaus his honest opinion regarding the changes he believes the Golden Bear needs to make.

Muirfield is actually one of the most popular golf courses on the PGA Tour amongst the players.

However, the 16th hole always seems to attract controversy.

Jordan Spieth told Jack Nicklaus he hated Muirfield’s 16th hole

Spieth has a reputation for speaking his mind, and that is something that Nicklaus clearly has a lot of time for.

When speaking during the Memorial Tournament in 2024, Nicklaus opened up about something Spieth told him about the 16th.

“Jordan says, what a horrible hole,” Nicklaus said.

“Well, I listen to that. You know, maybe it is a horrible hole. So how am I going to make it better? My whole goal here is to have 18 of the best holes I could have that will be, as I said earlier, firm, fast and fair.

Nobody will complain with that. But if it’s not fair and it’s too difficult, then they have a problem. As I say, I listen to that, I react to it, and no golf course is perfect.”

Nicklaus deserves huge credit for actually listening to the players, and making changes to the golf course if and where they are required.

Considering how good he was in his prime, it would be easy for him to brush off suggestions from certain players who don’t possess even half the talent that he did.

Muirfield’s 16th hole often a target of criticism

The 16th has been redesigned and renovated many times throughout the years.

The hole has been lengthened, shortened and then lengthened again.

Do you believe Jordan Spieth can get back to his best?

How many times will he win on the PGA Tour this season?

A lake was added in front of the green in 2010 and then the tee box was moved 30 yards out to the right more than a decade later, because it was impossible to hold the green.

However, it still feels as though Nicklaus hasn’t quite got the design right.

When the hole plays downwind, it can be almost impossible to hold the green, regardless of how well players strike their shots.

Perhaps the hole needs to be shortened, with the green complex changed to make it fairer, while still challenging for players to get their balls close.

One thing’s for sure; if Nicklaus is advised by the players that another change is required, he won’t hesitate to implement a plan to do so.
