Josh Allen opens up about trusting Gabe Davis as WR returns to practice with Bills amid offensive troubles

Josh Allen welcomed a familiar face back to the Buffalo Bills’ practice field this week. He praised Gabe Davis as they reunited amid a sluggish stretch for the team’s passing game.

The quarterback worked closely with Davis over four seasons before the receiver departed for Jacksonville in free agency. He returned to Buffalo’s practice squad in September and was cleared to practice this week after recovering from knee surgery.

Allen noted on Thursday how comfortable it felt seeing his former teammate back in uniform.

“Yeah, it looked like he was moving really well,” Allen told reporters. “Obviously a guy that I know very well and have a lot of trust in and a lot of faith in – good to see him out there.”

Buffalo’s offense could use the boost. The Bills have managed more than 245 passing yards, and Allen has thrown for fewer than 200 yards in back-to-back games this season. At 5-2, Buffalo’s record remains strong, but its aerial production continues to lag behind its early-season pace.

Gabe Davis spoke about rejoining the team and the ease of working again with Josh Allen despite their year apart.

“I’ve known Josh now for six years, played with him for four, going on five, I don’t think there’s anything we need to talk about or really learn about each other,” Davis told reporters after Thursday’s practice. “We have like 30-something touchdowns together. We’ve done it a lot, and it just feels like second nature at this point.”

Davis caught 163 passes for 2,730 yards and 27 touchdowns in his first stint with Buffalo. This includes a record-setting four-touchdown performance in the 2021 divisional round against Kansas City. The Bills will face the Chiefs in Week 9. This matchup could mark Davis’ full return to the active roster if the team chooses to elevate him.

Buffalo’s receiver depth has thinned in recent weeks. Free-agent addition Joshua Palmer has missed consecutive practices with ankle and knee issues. Second-year wideout Keon Coleman has struggled to find consistency since a breakout game in Week 1. That leaves Khalil Shakir as Allen’s most reliable option until reinforcements arrive.

Beat reporters observed Davis running full-speed routes on Thursday, a sign that he’s close to game readiness.
