Katt Williams discusses his plans for the McClellan Starship on a podcast

On Tuesday, comedian Katt Willaims discussed his plans for the Cold War-era “Starship” Barracks at McClellan on the podcast “This Past Weekend” with Theo Von.

Williams bought the sprawling facility to convert it into a movie production facility according to BET.com in November.

The site includes 30 separate concrete buildings, 3 million square feet of indoor space, 10 barracks with 20 rooms each, two large gymnasiums and over 90 acres of flat, usable land

Williams described the facility as “magnificent.”

“It’s going to be one of the greatest things that I personally have ever done,” Williams said. “We got the best parts of the base, they had chemical testing and stuff. We don’t have those parts of the base … we just have a wonderful, blessed space at the foothills of the mountains, and it’s really magical.”

Williams’ initiative aligns with a growing trend of entertainment figures establishing their own production studios. Tyler Perry, for instance, transformed a former military base in Atlanta into Tyler Perry Studios, a premier film and television production hub.

“I was able to see what Tyler Perry was able to do with 2 to 300 acres and a military base, and how you could make a movie studio out of that,” Williams said.

Williams emphasized the need for a space to produce quality movies without the constraints often associated with Hollywood.

“I just needed to be able to have a home where great movies and entertainment products could be made without any other shenanigans that are generally involved with Hollywood and be able to crank them out and all it needs to do is be good,” Williams said. “If it’s good, we’re going to make it.”

He also expressed a desire to provide a platform for talented individuals in the industry.

“We’re trying to create something where it can provide a platform for a lot of people to show what they do,” Williams said. “Where you can just basically have a great script and a great cast, and leave your troubles at the door and walk out with the movie in the can.”

Williams criticized Hollywood’s shift away from comedy films in favor of high-budget action films.

“Because they’ll let the comedy movie industry die if we allow it. You know what I mean? And nobody in the fan base ever said, ‘Hey, we don’t want any more funny movies.’ Nobody said that. None of the fans ever were like, ‘Hey, we’re tired of laughing.’ No one ever said that.”

“They just decided, you know, ‘we make more money in the superhero action department, let’s just do all those,’” Williams added.

Although Williams did not reveal specific projects planned for the studio, he highlighted its prime location.

“It’s a great location for where it is, you know, like it’s an hour and a half from Atlanta or less. It’s 45 minutes from Birmingham, you know. And I love that area, and they’re so thirsty to be involved, we have equal thirst, so everybody wants it to work. So it will,” Williams said.

Williams likened the studio’s function to a grocery store, ensuring quality entertainment production.

“So my job is just to make sure that all of the food that we sell in this grocery store belongs in this grocery store. … Is it a good quality, oh, we’ll get it in there, the people will want to see that. Yeah, they’d love that,” Williams said.

His goal is to create high-quality productions that can compete with big-budget films.

“We’re just trying to make the best project for you and to make your smaller budget be able to compete with the larger budgets,” Williams said.

“It just needs to be funny. It needs to be funny, but it also can’t be under budgeted, though, it cannot look cheap regardless, which means it can be, you know, and that goes to the equipment, into the lighting, and that’s why you need hundreds of acres of space to be able to have all of what we’re having,” Williams said.

Plans for the facility include constructing an amphitheater, sound stages and an auditorium, Williams said. He did not include a timeline for the development of the production studio.
