A potential Kansas City Chiefs move away from Missouri could be closer than ever, as Kansas legislative leaders will meet Monday to try to get closer to luring the team away from Missouri and relocating it to Kansas. Bonds worth hundreds of millions might be used to help the team build a dome stadium and an entertainment district.
The NFL team, alongside MLB’s Kansas City Royals, has tried to negotiate deals to build new stadiums for several years now. Kansas green-lighted $1 billion in bonds for stadium projects in June 2024. Lawmakers in the state presented legislation to help convince the Chiefs and the Royals cross state lines.
It was reported that the move to Kansas was gaining traction in February. If everything went according to plan, the team could have broken ground for a new stadium in November.
Peggy Loew, Sherman Smith and Steve Kraske of Kansas Reflector detailed on Thursday how legislative leaders will try to pull off this move.

“With a year-end deadline looming, the Legislative Coordinating Council will consider approving Sales Tax and Revenue Bond agreements with the Chiefs. Monday is the council’s last scheduled meeting of the year.
“With the bonds’ approval, the Kansas City Chiefs could move closer to uprooting six decades of NFL history in Missouri and relocate to Kansas. The deal is said to call for placing the new stadium near the Legends, a regional shopping mall and commercial area in the Village West development in Kansas City, Kansas.”
This time, however, the NFL franchise will be the only topic on the agenda, meaning the Royals’ future will remain up in the air until further notice.
Senate Minority Leader Dinah Sykes said the council will study a concrete proposal to help lure the four-time Super Bowl champions to Kansas.
Until when the KC Chiefs would play at Arrowhead Stadium?
The Kansas City Chiefs and Arrowhead Stadium are synonymous after many years of a strong relationship. The AFC West team could renovate the stadium ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup or stay in Missouri and build a new stadium.
However, the option of moving to Kansas appears to be the strongest at the moment.
The current contract with Arrowhead Stadium expires in 2031. It seems that they have some time to start the new projects, but Kansas legislative leaders don’t want to waste any time.
