Ludvig Aberg reveals what rules official warned him and Xander Schauffele about at The Players

Ludvig Aberg leads The Players Championship by three strokes heading into the final round on Sunday.

Aberg posted a third round 71 at TPC Sawgrass on Saturday to take control of The Players Championship.

Meanwhile, the Swede’s playing partner, Schauffele, experienced contrasting fortunes and labored to a disappointing round of 74.

It was thought that Aberg and Schauffele would separate themselves from the pack on day three of The Players, but the American never quite had his best stuff.

The 26-year-old from Sweden struggled early on as well, but managed to shoot under par, largely thanks to his eagle on the 11th.

Aberg shot 63 on Friday at The Players and that round put him in pole position to win at TPC Sawgrass.

While his third round was nowhere near as good as his second, he managed to do what all great players do by posting a score under par.

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing for Aberg in Ponte Vedra Beach on Saturday.

What rules official warned Ludvig Aberg and Xander Schauffele about at The Players

The two-time PGA Tour winner is well-known for his unflustered nature.

He is always cool and composed, regardless of how he is playing. However, that relaxed approach would have been tested to the limit on the fifth hole on Saturday.

Aberg spoke to reporters after finishing his third round at Sawgrass on Saturday evening.

He was asked whether he and Schauffele were warned to pick up their pace by a rules official on day three at Sawgrass.

Yes, on No. 5, Aberg said.

The 26-year-old was then asked if he thought the warning was unfair, given how quickly he plays.

No, I get it. I understand it, Aberg replied.

Obviously we weren’t keeping up with the group in front of us, so naturally the little notice was in place and it made a lot of sense.

Me kind of knowing that I am fast, I’m not really trying to do anything a ton different. I obviously try to be ready when it’s my turn to go but yeah, I think it is what it is.

Aberg is arguably the fastest player in the game, so he wouldn’t have been affected one little bit after being asked to speed up.

However, the pace of play warning from the official on the fifth hole may well have adversely impacted Schauffele.

Whether Aberg’s pace of play has been affected by the difficulty of Sawgrass

The Ponte Vedra Beach resident backed off numerous shots on day three at Sawgrass.

And he was asked by reporters whether the challenging nature of the golf course caused his usual pace of play to slow down.

Yeah, perhaps, Aberg admitted.

Yesterday we had a slow day on the golf course, we were in a twosome, probably some of the fastest guys on TOUR, and yeah, we had to kind of take our time at times.

But yeah, there’s certain tee balls where if you play kind of depending where the wind is, you have to really get your lines accurate, and that might take a couple of extra seconds.

But overall I feel like I’ve played here so many times that it’s pretty straightforward at this point.

Ludvig Aberg will be confident that he has what it takes to get the job done heading into the final round of The Players Championship.

That said, he will be hoping that he doesn’t have to deal with any more slow play warnings on Sunday at TPC Sawgrass.
