The Philadelphia Eagles acquired Michael Carter II on Wednesday via a trade with the New York Jets. The cornerback joins a deal that will send the Jets wide receiver John Metchie III and a 2027 sixth-round pick, while the Eagles receive a 2027 final-round selection.

Carter spent four full seasons with the Jets before his exit was finalized less than a week before the Nov. 4 trade deadline. The cornerback penned a heartfelt message to fans on social media on Wednesday as he prepares to continue his professional career in a new destination.

“New York, I’m forever grateful! You changed my life 💚 so much love to all my dawgs in the building. Greatness is on the way,” Carter wrote.

Michael Carter II was drafted by the Jets in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year rookie contract worth $3.8 million and was immediately part of the team’s defensive back rotation. He played both cornerback and nickelback positions with the Jets.

Carter signed a three-year extension worth $30.75 million last year, which included a guaranteed sum of $13.61 million. He ended his time with the Jets with 223 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 26 passes defended, three fumble recoveries, two interceptions, and one forced fumble in 65 games, including 25 starts.

What Michael Carter II brings to the Eagles’ secondary

The Philadelphia Eagles needed to address weaknesses in their secondary, and they have brought in Michael Carter II to do just that. The team has struggled at cornerback this season after seeing Darius Slay and Isaiah Rodgers depart in free agency.

The outside cornerback spot opposite Quinyon Mitchell has been a particular problem, necessitating changes. Neither Adoree’ Jackson nor Kelee Ringo has done enough to secure the position, and the arrival of Carter could eventually provide a solution.

While Carter excels in the slot and won’t play outside, his arrival allows Cooper DeJean to shift from slot to a full-time boundary role. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio had already indicated that DeJean’s move outside was under consideration, and Carter’s addition now makes that transition seamless.

Overall, the acquisition of Michael Carter II is a smart move for the Eagles. They are only dropping a pick in the final round of the 2027 NFL Draft to strengthen their defense. John Metchie III has seen limited action this season, playing just 7% of the snaps.
