Nelly Korda Opens Up About Her Struggles in Golf: ‘I Almost Gave Up — But Perseverance Changed Everything’

For someone standing at the pinnacle of women’s golf, it’s easy to assume that success came naturally. But for Nelly Korda, the world No. 1 and Olympic gold medalist, the journey to the top was anything but effortless.

In a candid conversation this week, Korda opened up about the early years of her career — the self-doubt, the frustration, and the moments when she almost walked away from the game entirely.

“There were so many days when I’d come home from practice and just cry,” Korda admitted. “I worked so hard, but nothing seemed to click. I honestly thought maybe golf just wasn’t for me.”

Her honesty struck a chord with fans around the world. It’s rare for an athlete so dominant to talk so openly about failure — but for Korda, those struggles are what shaped her into the champion she is today.

A Rocky Beginning

Growing up in a family of elite athletes, expectations were sky-high from the start. Her father, Petr Korda, was a Grand Slam tennis champion, and her sister, Jessica Korda, was already making waves on the LPGA Tour.

For young Nelly, following in those footsteps wasn’t easy. She took up golf at a young age but soon realized that natural talent only got her so far.

“When you grow up surrounded by success, it’s hard not to compare yourself,” she said. “I’d look at Jessica and think, ‘Why can’t I hit it like that?’ or ‘Why can’t I play that confidently?’ It was frustrating.”

She remembers being a teenager struggling through tournaments, missing cuts, and questioning whether the grind was worth it.

“There was a time I told my parents I wanted to quit,” Korda said softly. “I just didn’t see the results. You practice every day, hours and hours, and when you still lose — it hurts. It makes you question everything.”

Finding Her Why

But instead of walking away, Korda found herself drawn back to the game — not because it got easier, but because she realized golf had become part of her identity.

“I couldn’t quit,” she said. “Even when I hated it, I loved it. It sounds strange, but golf teaches you about yourself — your patience, your discipline, your mindset. It’s not just about winning; it’s about learning who you are under pressure.”

Her turning point came around 2017, when she began focusing less on results and more on improvement. She started working closely with her coach on mental strength, learning to control her thoughts as carefully as her swing.

“I used to think perfection was the goal,” Korda explained. “Now I understand that golf is a game of mistakes. The best players aren’t perfect — they just recover faster.”

That shift in mindset became the foundation of her rise. By 2021, she was a six-time LPGA Tour winner, an Olympic gold medalist, and the face of women’s golf around the world.

The Power of Perseverance

When asked what kept her going through those dark moments, Korda doesn’t hesitate.

“Perseverance,” she said. “You can have talent, you can have support, but if you don’t have persistence — you’ll never make it. Every champion I know failed more times than they won.”

Her work ethic is legendary. Even now, with multiple titles to her name, she’s often the first one at the range and the last to leave.

Her longtime caddie once described her practice sessions as “quietly intense.” She doesn’t yell, she doesn’t throw clubs — but she pushes herself relentlessly.

“You’ll never hear Nelly say ‘I’m good enough,’” he said. “That’s not in her vocabulary. She’s always chasing better.”

Dealing with Pressure and Expectation

Of course, success brought new challenges. Being at the top of the world rankings means every round, every shot, every missed putt is under scrutiny.

Korda admits that the pressure sometimes gets to her.

“There’s a moment before every major where I still feel nervous,” she confessed. “I’ve learned that nerves are a good thing. It means you care. But I also remind myself — I’ve been through worse. I survived those early years. I can handle this.”

She also credits her family — especially her sister Jessica — for helping her stay grounded.

“Jess and I have such a special bond,” Korda said. “We compete, but we support each other completely. When I struggled, she reminded me that everyone has their own journey. That’s something I carry with me even now.”

Inspiring a New Generation

Korda’s story has resonated far beyond golf. To young athletes — especially girls — she represents resilience, humility, and the power of persistence.

“If you’re out there struggling, thinking you’re not good enough,” she said, “just remember — I was there too. Everyone starts somewhere. You have to believe that effort pays off, even when you don’t see it right away.”

She often shares advice with junior players during clinics, emphasizing patience and mental health.

“I tell them to love the process,” she smiled. “Winning is amazing, but the real magic is in becoming stronger, step by step. That’s what makes the journey worth it.”

The Glow of Now

Standing on the green today, Nelly Korda exudes a calm confidence that can only come from surviving storms. Every trophy on her shelf tells a story — not of ease, but of endurance.

She’s still chasing improvement, still learning, still fighting to be better. But she’s also proud of how far she’s come.

“When I look back,” she said, “I’m grateful I didn’t quit. Every tear, every bad round, every moment of doubt — it built me. It made me appreciate this life more than I ever thought I could.”

Her story reminds us that greatness doesn’t come from never falling — it comes from getting up, again and again.

Because as Nelly Korda proves, perseverance doesn’t just change your game.
It changes your life. ⛳💫
