Nick Sirianni makes feelings clear on possible Jalen Hurts benching amid turnover drama in Philadelphia

Jalen Hurts and the Philadelphia Eagles’ offense have struggled significantly in the last couple of games. This has seen them lose three consecutive games since the 16-9 win over the Detroit Lions in November, raising concerns about their ability to defend the Super Bowl.

It’s been muted in some quarters that the Eagles might need to bench Hurts to get something going on the offense as the regular season winds up. Following the latest loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, Nick Sirianni was asked on the “94WIP Morning Show” if that’s under consideration.

“No, I think that’s ridiculous,” Sirianni said. “I know every time I go out in that field with Jalen Hurts as our quarterback, we have a chance to win the game. And that’s something that’s been proven. We’ve won a lot, a lot of football games. And again, we don’t ever go into something in science.

“This is a team game. This is the most ultimate team game. You win together as a team, you lose together as a team; it’s never just one thing … I know every time I walk out in that field, and Jalen Hurts is the starting quarterback, I have so much confidence that we can win every game.”

Jalen Hurts struggled significantly in the 22-19 overtime loss against the Chargers on Monday night. The quarterback completed 21 of 40 passes for 240 yards without a touchdown, while throwing four interceptions. He’s fast becoming the shadow of the quarterback who led them to the Super Bowl victory.

Nick Sirianni discloses how much he wants Jalen Hurts to run with the ball

While there’s a lot of struggle in the Eagles’ passing game, Jalen Hurts showed some glimpses of brilliance on the ground against the Chargers. This led to the question of how much Nick Sirianni wants the quarterback to run with the ball on the “94WIP Morning Show.”

“Jalen has a very unique ability to extend plays when stuff breaks down, and sometimes that’s scrambling and sometimes that’s extending a play to throw the ball down the field … So quarterback runs can come in a lot of different ways,” Sirianni said.

“Obviously sometimes it’s off a breakdown, sometimes it’s off a planned call, and again, we always go into a plan thinking about the best way to attack, and then you adjust it off of what you’re seeing. So always part of the plan, and always will continue to be part of the plan.”

Jalen Hurts has rushed for 337 yards and eight touchdowns on 88 carries across 13 games this season. After his passer ratings have continued to drop in the last couple of games, gaining control on the ground might be an option for the Eagles going forward.
