Novak Djokovic’s retirement talk acknowledges Joao Fonseca’s talent

The singles action at the US Open is underway, with the players fighting for the last most prestigious title of the season. The competitors are also finding time to connect and bound beyond the court.
Novak Djokovic, Joao Fonseca, Coco Gauff and Frances Tiafoe shared lighthearted moments in an entertaining “question train,” giving fans a glimpse into their personalities.

Fonseca asked Djokovic a playful question about his retirement plans. The 24-time Major winner responded with humor, imagining himself as Joao’s coach one day and advising a teenager to prepare for that financially.

Novak Djokovic's retirement talk acknowledges Joao Fonseca's talent

For the Serb, it was another chance to show his appreciation for tennis’ emerging stars. The lighthearted response carried a deeper meaning – a champion of Djokovic’s stature acknowledging the potential of a rising teenager.

Novak’s move reflected respect and belief in Joao’s game, dedication and talent. The Brazilian has quickly made a name for himself this year after finishing the 2024 season in the top-150.

He displayed his rich talent many times this season, lifting his first ATP title in Buenos Aires and stunning Andrey Rublev at the Australian Open. Everyone is eager to show him chase the notable titles, and Djokovic is in that group.

Joao Fonseca, Cincinnati 2025

Novak has long been known for encouraging younger players. He has been helping Hamad Medjedovic, and Jakub Mensik also received the legend’s support and mentorship.

Joao Fonseca fits into that pattern, and while he does not need any kind of financial support, it’s always encouraging to interact with the most accomplished player of all time.

This story reflects the passing of knowledge. The veteran who marked a golden era of men’s tennis shows confidence in the next generation’s ability to carry the game forward and keep the crowd and sponsors.

“My plan after I retire from tennis is to coach Joao Fonseca. I will be very expensive for him, so be ready,” Novak Djokovic said.
