Rory McIlroy recently said that he would love to see Brooks Koepka in TGL. However, he added that there were more “powerful” people than him, so the decision didn’t lie only with himself.
Rory McIlroy was at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, on Friday, January 2, for Boston Common’s first TGL match of the season. Ahead of the match, the Northern Irishman was asked if he would like to see Koepka playing TGL someday. For the uninitiated, the five-time major champion left the Saudi-backed circuit last month.
“I would say that’s up to people that are more powerful and more important than me,” he said. “But I am one of the founders. I would love him to play. If there’s space on a team for Brooks to come and play, it only makes what we’re trying to do stronger….”
“He’s a five-time major champion. He’s been one of the best players of our generation. If he decides it’s something that he wants to do, I’m sure we’ll find a way to include him,” he added.
Rory McIlroy ‘okays’ the return of Bryson DeChambeau from LIV Golf
In a recent podcast with The Overlap, Rory McIlroy said he would be okay with Bryson DeChambeau and other LIV stars making a PGA Tour return.
“They’ve made the money,” he said. “But they’ve paid their consequence in terms of the reputation and some of the things they’ve lost by going over there [to LIV]. If it made the overall tour stronger to have Bryson DeChambeau back and whoever else, I would be Okay with it.”
“But again, it’s not just me, and I recognize that not everyone is in my position. It would be up to the collective group of PGA Tour members to make that decision,” he added.
While Koepka is out of the Saudi-backed circuit, DeChambeau is still part of it. The two-time US Open champion is still one of the most popular faces in golf, and if he leaves the league anytime soon, it will be a big loss for them.
LIV Golf’s new season will begin next month in Riyadh, and it will be the first event with a new 72-hole format. Besides, the league has also increased the field size to 57, comprising thirteen four-member teams and five wild card entries. Three of the wild cards will be picked from the LIV Golf Promotions, which will kick off later this week.
