PGA Tour evaluating potential schedule reduction, could drop Hawaii swing in coming years: Report

The PGA Tour is potentially going to have a major schedule overhaul, and we might see half of the events get cut down. While Harris English did hint at the potential move last week, reports have emerged shedding further light on the matter.

As per Golf Digest’s exclusive report, the PGA Tour is exploring options to cut down the schedule to 20-22 events by 2027. In making this move, they might cut the Hawaii Swing, Torrey Pines, and a few more events on the West Coast swing. The Tour is not counting the four majors as part of the 20-22 events and is also looking to have bye weeks in between the majors.

The Brian Rolapp-led team is also looking to sacrifice one of the two Texas events. Besides, events at PGA National Resort and Innisbrook might see an axe as well in 2027. The PGA Tour is also looking to add a couple of events in new metro cities. However, the PGA Tour is not looking to touch the Fall events, and they will continue to be a separate section.

As per Joel Beall of Golf Digest, the Strategic Sports Group’s $1.5 billion investment is the reason behind the reduction of the schedule.

“The companies that infused $1.5 billion into the tour want return on their investment, and with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund no longer expected to add another $1.5 billion to the mix, SSG needs to start finding other avenues to recoup its money,” he wrote.

However, the road isn’t clear for the PGA Tour, as they will have to face obstacles like TV contracts, which are in place until 2030. Besides, this move might further upset the professionals already frustrated by the Signature event system. The report further states that the 20-22 event schedule might come into existence by 2028, if not 2027.
