Phil Mickelson has shown support for the late economist Milton Friedman, agreeing with his view that inflation is caused by excessive government spending. The LIV golf star reshared a video of Friedman on X, emphasizing the economist’s explanation of the root causes of rising prices.

In the clip, Friedman explained that inflation is caused by the government, saying that only Washington can make money. He added that consumers, producers, trade unions, foreign leaders, or oil imports do not cause inflation. According to the late economist and statistician, the main reason is “too much government spending” and the creation of too much money.

Mickelson added his own comment when resharing the video, writing:

“This is the truth. When inflation goes up there is only one cause.”

Later the same day, Mickelson reshared a post from another user who raised concerns about the planned closure of the Benicia Refinery in California. Mickelson added his own thoughts, stressing its importance for national security.

“Benicia is critical to our National Security and can not be shut down. It supplies our entire South Pacific fleet with fuel as well as Travis Air Force base exclusively and much more. Shutting down would create more dependence on foreign oil and make our nation vulnerable,” Mickelson wrote.

Phil Mickelson, who is taking a break after the 2025 LIV Golf season, has been active on social media throughout the year, sharing his views on economic and political issues. He has previously commented on issues such as the rising gas prices in California and other energy matters.

Phil Mickelson criticizes high California gas prices

Last month, Phil Mickelson spoke out about rising fuel prices in California. On November 12, an X user shared images of Chevron gas pumps from California and Arizona, pointing out that prices in the former state were about $2 higher per gallon. Mickelson reshared the post, writing:

“This is sad and going to get worse.”

He also reshared an interview from Fox Business Network’s The Bottom Line, where candidate Hilton supported offshore oil drilling off California’s coast to help lower fuel costs. Hilton said his goal was to bring gas prices down to $3 per gallon. Mickelson commented:

“Finally, someone speaking common sense,” Mickelson wrote.

Finally someone speaking common sense 👏👏👏

The six-time major winner has long criticized California’s energy policies and leadership. He has previously called out Governor Gavin Newsom over oil and gas regulations. Born in San Diego, Phil Mickelson later moved to Florida partly to avoid the state’s high taxes, and he continues to follow energy and fuel issues closely.
