It is fair to say that Brandel Chamblee has managed to stir up some real controversy in recent days with his claim that The Players Championship stands above the four major championships.

The PGA Tour caught the eye this past week when they unveiled a trailer for The Players Championship next month.

What do you make of Brandel Chamblee’s comments on The Players Championship?

Chamblee raised some eyebrows with his comments on The Players…

“In every single way that a metric could be used to measure whether something is a major, the Players, to me, stands alone and above all the other four major championships as not just a major. It is in my estimation, the best major.“

The video ended with the tagline: ‘March is going to be major’. Of course, there has long been a debate over just where the event at TPC Sawgrass ranks amongst the best tournaments on the schedule.

In the eyes of many, it is the unofficial fifth major. It is the flagship event on the PGA Tour, and it has delivered so many exciting finishes over the years.

But Brandel Chamblee went a lot further.

Speaking at the WM Phoenix Open, Chamblee not only backed The Players to be considered a major, but he put it ahead of the four biggest events of the year.

Unsurprisingly, his comments have come in for ridicule. Lee Westwood was left baffled by Chamblee’s view.

And Phil Mickelson has now had his say when it comes to Chamblee’s opinion that The Players Championship is bigger than the four majors.

The statement Phil Mickelson made about The Players Championship after his 2007 victory

Mickelson did not have the greatest record at TPC Sawgrass across his career. His win in 2007 was just one of two top-five finishes he had in 28 appearances at the event.

He went on to miss six cuts in seven years between 2013 and 2019.

Mickelson was at least tied for the lead after both of the first two rounds back in 2007. And he went into Sunday one shot behind Sean O’Hair.

The six-time major champion was two shots clear on the penultimate hole. Unfortunately for O’Hair, he managed to put two balls in the water on the iconic 17th to see his challenge come to an end.

Interestingly, Mickelson was asked after his victory about where it would rank in his career.

And although he did not quite echo Chamblee’s praise, he was not far away.

“I don’t know exactly today, but I think as I look back on my career after I stop playing, I think I’ll look back on this tournament victory in the same light as the majors,” he said.
