Rich Beem has suggested what those watching at home may not quite realise about how Scottie Scheffler behaves on the golf course, as the world number one looks to address what has been a strange start to the season.
Scottie Scheffler has won on the PGA Tour this year. However, that victory at The American Express has been somewhat overshadowed by the way he has started his last three tournaments.
Are you concerned about Scottie Scheffler right now?
He is really struggling with his first rounds right now…
He has failed to break par in his opening round at the WM Phoenix Open, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, and the Genesis Invitational.
He was last in the field at Riviera when play was suspended on Thursday, as he found himself at five over par through 10 holes. It was the worst start Scheffler has ever made to a PGA Tour event.
Rich Beem comments on Scottie Scheffler’s behaviour after yet another slow start on the PGA Tour
What has made his performances all the more bizarre is how well he has responded each time. Scheffler has finished no lower than 12th this year, while he was one shot off making the playoff at TPC Scottsdale.
Speaking on the Sky Sports Golf Podcast, Rich Beem admitted that he is baffled by Scheffler’s recent form. He also suggested that the 29-year-old may not be quite as good at keeping his cool as some might assume.
“I can’t explain it. Somebody has asked me what’s going on with Scottie Scheffler? Well, he’s human, first of all, we know that. It doesn’t make sense, especially from the standpoint of Phoenix, he still went out and made five or six birdies in the opening round and still shot over par,” he said.
“I can understand maybe Riviera, opening day, very tough. I can even understand maybe a little bit where you get off to a bland start at Pebble Beach. It’s not going to get any easier going forward. I’m assuming his next start is going to be Bay Hill where he’s won. Then he’s going to go to The Players Championship, one of the hardest golf courses on tour.
“It’s a trend that could continue just because of the venues, not that I fully expect it to, but it’s just not happening for him. And we all know that he gets a little hot under the collar at times. Maybe some people don’t quite see it as much as we do in the media when we follow him every day. He can get a little bit displeased with himself.”
When Scottie Scheffler simply could not contain his anger
It has appeared that Scheffler has the best mindset of anyone on the PGA Tour. No one looks more comfortable when they have a lead on a big stage.
But heading into 2026, it felt like such a long time since Scheffler had not been at his best. Even when his results were underwhelming at the start of last season, there was the very valid reason that he was coming back from a hand injury.
There have been some notable occasions when Scheffler has failed to contain his frustration. Most famously, Scheffler came in for criticism for an outburst during the BMW Championship in 2024.
But it has to be said that Scheffler deserves enormous credit for the way he has fought back over each of his last three appearances.
If he was unable to use that aggression correctly, he would have missed the cut twice this year – and by some distance.
