Robert MacIntyre said that he snapped his putter at the Sony Open in Hawaii, which cost him the title this week. The Swedish golfer played at the PGA Tour season-opening event, held from January 15 to 18. He had a decent game and settled in a tie for fourth place, missing the title by just four strokes.
In the post-round press conference, he revealed that he had snapped his putter on Friday on the 17th hole and missed a three-hole footer on the next hole. He said that his “attitude” just “cost” him this “tournament.” He said:
“Big reminder for me that attitude has got to be right for 72 holes, not just 36. Because at the end of the day my attitude cost me this golf tournament, and can’t be allowing that.”
Meanwhile, speaking of his putter, he said (via ASAP Sports):
“I am rolling the putter actually — I don’t know if it’s a good thing to say, but snapped my putter on 17 on Friday afternoon. Missed a three-footer on 18 Friday afternoon, so doing that cost me a shot.”
It was Chris Gotterup who won the 2026 Sony Open in Hawaii. He carded the four rounds of 63, 69, 68, and 64 to register a two-stroke win in the game. Ryan Gerard carded a round of 65 on Sunday and jumped three spots on the leaderboard to settle in a solo second place. Patrick Rodgers finished in solo third place.
Robert MacIntyre opens up about his performance at Sony Open in Hawaii

Robert MacIntyre started his campaign at the 2026 Sony Open in Hawaii with an opening round of 67. But after a decent start, he had a tough time on the greens on Friday in the second round of the event. He made a double bogey in the second hole, followed by a birdie on the next hole.
He carded a bogey on the fourth hole. He made two more birdies on the front nine and added a birdie on the back nine. However, he struggled on the 17th, making a bogey, followed by another bogey on the 18th for a round of 1-over 71.
Robert MacIntyre then played the third round of 67, followed by an impressive round of 63 on Sunday. He jumped 16 spots on the leaderboard to settle in a tie for fourth place with Jacob Bridgeman.
He talked about his performance in the post-round press conference and said (via ASAP Sports):
“So first two days I felt rusty, very rusty. Not around the greens like chipping whatnot. Putting was off, just routes were off. Iron play, approach play, normally I can shape it into the winds and certain shots I didn’t have.
“And I’m like, I feel I’ve lost this. Yesterday was better. I hit 17 out of 18 greens. Really good approach play. And then today was very good approach play. Wedge play was superb. Felt like I missed in the right spots off the tee to give myself chances and I putted beautifully,” he added.
Robert MacIntyre has also played in the event in 2025, but last year he struggled with his game. He carded four rounds of 68, 68, 71, and 67 to settle in a tie for 53rd place. He was the runner-up at the BMW Championship last year.
