Rory McIlroy has said that the reportedly proposed PGA Tour schedule of February to August is “very condensed.” He added that it was a lot of golf in a short period of time but also opens opportunities to play around the world in the remaining months.

Recently, it was reported that the PGA Tour was looking at a major schedule overhaul and was planning to implement from next season or two. This included shortening the number of events to 20-22 and a late February start.

On Monday, January 26, during a post-round interview at the TGL, Rory McIlroy shared his take on the rumored condensed schedule.

“We’ve all heard the rumblings without really knowing what’s being said in those rooms and what they’re thinking of,” he said. “Obviously I think we’ve all heard starting maybe after the Super Bowl and then going through to the end of August before the football season starts again. That seems very condensed to me.

“But seems like a lot of golf in a pretty short period of time, depending on how many events they want to play. But that does open up opportunity for the other five months of the year around the world. I’m a DP World Tour member, a very proud one, and I think that opens an opportunity up for them to showcase some of their biggest events in that time of the year.”

Rory McIlroy added that with TGL, they had done a good job in starting it earlier to not clash much with the PGA Tour season.

“I think if the Tour does go to that condensed schedule, it does open opportunities up for others to take advantage of those other five months of the year for sure,” he said.

When will Rory McIlroy begin the PGA Tour 2026 season?

Rory McIlroy will begin his PGA Tour schedule with the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am next month. The fourth event of the season will take place from February 1-4 at Pebble Beach Golf Links in Pebble Beach, California.

Last year, the Northern Irishman began his season at Pebble Beach and claimed the title in a playoff. This year he will look for the same start on the PGA Tour.

McIlroy was last seen at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic, where he didn’t have a great week. The five-time major champion finished T20 after shooting 2-under, his worst score there since 2008.
