He has won four individual events: the Pebble Beach Pro-Am, The Players Championship, The Masters, and the Irish Open.

McIlroy then capped off his greatest year by helping Team Europe win the Ryder Cup in the United States.

The Northern Irishman has now reflected on all of his achievements in 2025 ahead of the DP World Tour India Championship this week.

Rory McIlroy calls his 2025 season ‘weird’ despite winning so many events

Sky Sports’ Henni Zuel asked McIlroy what his reaction would have been if she had predicted all of his victories before the season started.

He then explained that, to win all of those events, he would have expected to have played his absolute best golf throughout the year.

In reality, McIlroy’s play has been inconsistent. The real reason why he has succeeded is that he has elevated his game when it has mattered the most.

“I wouldn’t say you’re mad, but I would say that it sounds like a perfect year to me,” he said. “It’s weird. I would think that I’d have to play perfect golf to achieve all of that, and I haven’t.

“I haven’t played perfectly this year. I’ve played a lot of really good golf, and I’ve played a lot of really good golf at the right time.

“I think, if anything, I’ve learned maybe how to summon my best stuff when I really need it. Especially going into the latter part of my career, I think that’s really important.”

Rory McIlroy wants to emulate Justin Rose going forward

McIlroy realizes that he probably will not have the same consistency in his late 30s and 40s that he previously had, but that he can still produce his best golf at crucial times.

He then named European Ryder Cup teammate Justin Rose as a prime example of a clutch golfer in the later stages of his career.

“I look at someone like Justin Rose, who, at 45 years of age, is still able to summon his best golf in the biggest moments, like in the Masters or in the Ryder Cup,” McIlroy added. “He seems to be able to turn it in exactly when he needs to.

“As I look towards the next few years of my career, as I’m getting a little older, to be able to do that and understand how to do that is really important.”

Rose was narrowly defeated by McIlroy in a playoff at The Masters, but he did win at the FedEx St Jude Championship in August and excelled at the Ryder Cup.
