Rory McIlroy’s comments on Jon Rahm could lead to a fractured European Ryder Cup team-room

Rory McIlroy continues to speak candidly about Jon Rahm’s Ryder Cup situation.

McIlroy and Rahm have been the two lynchpins for the European Ryder Cup team over the past few years.

They are good friends as well, but the Northern Irishman has not minced his words about the Spaniard over the past couple of months.

What do you think about Luke Donald’s appointment?

Is this good or bad news for Europe?

McIlroy sent a strong message to Rahm in January after it became clear that the 31-year-old was not willing to pay his outstanding DP World Tour fines, potentially rendering him ineligible for the 2027 Ryder Cup.

“We went really hard on the Americans about being paid to play the Ryder Cup, and we also said that we would pay to play in Ryder Cups. There’s two guys that can prove it,” McIlroy said.

Rahm surely wouldn’t have taken kindly to those remarks from McIlroy but the five-time major winner’s latest comments may well have got under the LIV golfer’s skin even more so.

Whether you like McIlroy or not, you have to respect the fact that when he speaks to reporters, he does so in an extremely open and honest manner.

He never gives cliched responses and always speaks from the heart. However, Rahm would not have appreciated the 36-year-old’s latest remarks on his situation with the DP World Tour.

Rory McIlroy responds to Jon Rahm’s comments

In February, it was announced that eight LIV golfers had been ‘granted release’ by the DP World Tour to compete on the Saudi-backed golf league.

They are allowed to play in certain LIV events which run directly alongside DP World Tour tournaments.

As a part of the deal, they will also be required to play in six DP World Tour events, meaning that their schedules could be packed in 2026.

Rahm complained about the DP World Tour’s offer, suggesting that he doesn’t want to be held to ransom regarding when and where he plays golf.

“I just don’t like the situation. I think we should be able to freely play where we want and have the choice to play where we want and not be dictated what we do. Especially myself. I can’t speak for others; only myself,” he said.

The irony of those comments seems to have escaped Rahm, given his LIV Golf contract!

McIlroy, who’s in Orlando right now ahead of the Arnold Palmer Invitational, was asked about Rahm’s response to the DP World Tour’s offer.

Yeah, I mean I, geez, in my opinion, it’s a really generous deal, McIlroy said.

Like it’s a much softer deal than what Brooks took to come back and play on the PGA TOUR. Look, the European Tour can only do so much to accommodate these guys. So, you know, if you want to play on the Ryder Cup you have to be a member of the DP World Tour.

You have to be a member of the DP World Tour, you have to abide by the rules and regulations. And the rules and regulations were, okay, if you break the media rights agreement and you go and play in a conflicting event, you don’t get a release, you’re subject to fines. So the guys didn’t want to pay these fines, that’s fine.

So then the European Tour said, okay, let’s try to come up with some sort of solution where you don’t have to pay the fines, so that we can ease that burden on you, but still retain your membership. And I, look, there’s a reason eight of the nine guys took that deal, right.

I think it’s a really good deal. Yeah, obviously Jon doesn’t think so, and he’s obviously well within his rights to think that way. But I just don’t see what more the European Tour can do to accommodate these guys to retain their membership.

Rory’s McIlroy’s Jon Rahm comments could cause Ryder Cup issue

If Rahm doesn’t pay his outstanding fines, he will not be a member of the DP World Tour, and that would make him ineligible to play at the Ryder Cup.

However, if he does play at Adare Manor in 2027, there may be some awkward exchanges between him and McIlroy.

The Northern Irishman continually sending thinly-veiled digs in the 2023 Masters champion’s direction is certainly not ideal.

Should Jon Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton be allowed to play at the 2027 Ryder Cup?

However, the general consensus is that Rahm will be part of the European Ryder Cup team at Adare Manor in 18 months’ time.

Luke Donald will be monitoring Rahm’s situation very closely ahead of the showdown with the United States in Ireland.

Europe have performed brilliantly well in the Ryder Cup over the past 30 years or so due to exceptional levels of camaraderie and team unity.

And McIlroy continually criticizing Rahm’s Ryder Cup stance in such a candid manner may risk jeopardizing the European team-room harmony.
