Scottie Scheffler responds when asked if he truly believes he can still win the Phoenix Open

Scottie Scheffler is just about hanging in there after his third round at the WM Phoenix Open.

Scheffler shot a 67 on day three at the WM Phoenix Open and once again, he was nowhere near his best.

However, he still has an outside shot at winning his 21st PGA Tour event on Sunday, although he will have to be much sharper in all departments of his game during his final round, if he’s to reign supreme in the desert.

Is Scottie Scheffler more likely to end up with 50 PGA Tour wins and 10 majors or 25 wins and 5 majors?

Have we already seen the best of Scottie Scheffler?

Scheffler turned things around at the WM Phoenix Open after a disastrous opening round at TPC Scottsdale.

He posted a 73 on day one but followed that up with rounds of 65 and 67.

The 29-year-old world number one ended the day five shots adrift of the leader, Hideki Matsuyama.

Scottie Scheffler says if he believes he can still win the Phoenix Open

Scheffler’s turnaround this week at the Phoenix Open has been truly remarkable.

He was nowhere near his best on Thursday, but his ball-striking and short game improved enormously on Friday and Saturday.

But can he really still win, given the huge deficit he has to make up and the sheer volume of players he will need to overtake?

Yeah, I felt like I was really close today to doing something special, Scheffler said.

Tomorrow, I have put myself behind the eight-ball but that doesn’t mean I’m out of the tournament necessarily.

You know, a really good round tomorrow could go a long way and we’ll see how the leaderboard shakes out as the day goes on.

Do you think Scottie Scheffler will beat Tiger Woods’ consecutive cuts record?

He’s not even halfway there right now…

Overall, I’m proud of the way I played the last two days and I’m hoping for something special tomorrow.

Scottie Scheffler’s stats on day three of the WM Phoenix Open

There aren’t many golfers better than Scheffler at remaining in contention when he doesn’t have his best stuff.

His performance at TPC Scottsdale this week has been evidence of that.

Here are his stats from the third round of the WM Phoenix Open on Saturday.

Stats Scheffler’s round three rank
Strokes gained off the tee 15
Strokes gained approach 31
Strokes gained around the greens 3
Strokes gained putting 34
Strokes gained total T-10

The key point to note with Scheffler is that he has recorded some big come-from-behind wins previously in his career.

He came from five back to win The Players Championship in 2024 and triumphed at the 2024 Olympics after starting the final round four adrift of the leaders.

If Scheffler manages to tighten up his iron play on day four of the WM Phoenix Open, there’s no reason why he can’t make it win number 21 on the PGA Tour.
