Sean Payton disses Falcons amid Matt Ryan in talks to return to Atlanta after missing playoffs

Sean Payton mocked the Atlanta Falcons on X as the franchise is exploring bringing back Matt Ryan. The Denver Broncos coach jabbed at his former division opponent, which is amid another disappointing season.

Payton spent more than a decade coaching the New Orleans Saints before taking over in Denver. The Saints clashed with Atlanta during those years.

The coach fired off his response on Sunday, reacting to reporter D. Orlando Ledbetter’s post about the Falcons’ plans moving forward.

“🙃,” Payton wrote.

Ledbetter posted about Atlanta wanting to mirror what the LA Rams have accomplished since hiring their coach, Sean McVay, in 2017. The team has made seven postseason trips and two championship game appearances.

Meanwhile, the Falcons (6-9) will finish the campaign with their eighth consecutive year below .500.

Jay Glazer tweeted during “Fox NFL Sunday” about potential personnel changes. Atlanta Falcons owner Arthur Blank has been discussing with his former starting quarterback the possibility of returning to the building in a different capacity.

Matt Ryan walked away from football in 2023 and transitioned into a career in television. He appears on CBS broadcasts and recently called a holiday matchup on Netflix. People familiar with him told Glazer that he’s mulling the opportunity seriously.

The timing raises eyebrows, as both Terry Fontenot and Raheem Morris face uncertainty. Fontenot has run personnel decisions for half a decade without a winning campaign. Morris is wrapping up his second year at the helm, while Blank is reportedly examining the entire operation over the coming weeks.

Ryan threw passes for Atlanta across 14 campaigns after he was selected at No. 3 in 2008. He amassed 59,735 passing yards and 367 touchdowns while wearing red and black. Ryan’s best year was in 2016 when he led the franchise to the Super Bowl. That year’s team collapsed in the title game after building a massive lead.
