Sean Payton took over as the coach of the Denver Broncos in 2023. On Sunday, they secured a dominating 19-3 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. This victory helped Payton and his team become the No.1-seeded team in the AFC, earning a bye in this season’s playoffs.
After the victory, Sean Payton’s daughter, Meghan Payton, took to social media to share her reaction to this achievement. On her Instagram story, she shared a post from NFL insider Adam Schefter that had the photo of Broncos quarterback Bo Nix with the No.1 seed written on it.

Last week, Sean Payton and his team won the AFC West title. Their 20-13 victory over the Chiefs, along with the Chargers’ 20-16 loss to the Texans, carved the path to emerge as division champions.

On Sunday, against Jim Harbaugh’s team, Bo Nix completed 14 of 23 passes for 141 yards and no touchdowns. Placekicker Will Lutz carried the offense, scoring four total field goals.
On the other hand, the Chargers, who are also in the playoffs as a wild-card entrant, decided to rest quarterback Justin Herbert, giving backup Trey Lance a chance. However, he had a disappointing game, completing 20 of 44 passes for 136 yards, no touchdowns, and an interception.
This victory helped the Broncos secure a 14-3 record with a two-game winning streak. The last time they were No.1-seeded in the AFC was during their Super Bowl-winning season in 2015.
Sean Payton gets real on Week 18 victory over the Chargers
In the postgame press conference, the Broncos coach applauded his players for securing the victory against their division rivals and clinching the AFC’s No.1 seed.
However, Payton also highlighted the lack of touchdowns in the game, expressing his desire to score more of them in the red zone.
“Look, huge win, obviously,” Payton said. “I think the, that our guys did their best. You can’t control who’s playing for the other team. But, man, we did all the things that we did defensively. I would like to score more touchdowns in the red zone.
“But, you play a game in a certain way. You know, we understood what was at stake and that was to have the opportunity to have the No.1 seed, which is pretty good.”
