Cleveland Browns rookie and Coach Prime’s son Shedeur Sanders attended his former college teammate Dominiq Ponder’s funeral. The Colorado Buffaloes held a memorial service for the late quarterback on Saturday at Glenn Miller Ballroom inside the University of Colorado campus.

A photo of Sanders attending the funeral service started circulating on social media. He was seen paying his respects to Ponder while being accompanied by the late quarterback’s father.

Dominiq Ponder passed away last Sunday at the age of 23 after a car accident. According to the Colorado State Patrol, he lost control of his 2023 Tesla Model 3 while driving on Baseline Road near Newland Court at 3 a.m. After losing control, the car collided with a guardrail and an electric pole and caught fire. Ponder lost his life on the scene.

Shedeur Sanders previously expressed his condolences to Ponder’s family with a post on social media. The late quarterback joined the Buffs in 2024 via the transfer portal. Last season, Ponder played in two games as the fourth-string quarterback on Colorado’s depth chart.

After Ponder’s passing, CU Director of Athletics Fernando Lovo released a statement regarding the incident.

“The entire CU Athletics family is devastated at large at the tragic passing of Dominiq Ponder,” Lovo said. “He epitomized values of passion, enthusiasm, toughness and intelligence that were revered by his teammates and coaches alike. Our hearts go out to his family and all of his teammates during this difficult time.”

Deion Sanders shares a message as Colorado heads into spring practice following Dominiq Ponder’s death

Despite the loss of Dominiq Ponder, reports stated that the Buffs will continue their offseason preparations as usual to honor their fallen comrade.

While speaking with the media ahead of spring practice on Saturday, Deion Sanders talked about the late quarterback.

“Team did a candlelight vigil on Thursday on the field for, it’s hard to say his name,” Coach Prime said as per SI. “As a father, that when we send our kids to college, we send a kid to college to mature, progress, learnwho he or she is, and come back with something that they glean from that college.

“We don’t send a kid to college to not come back. And that’s the most painful thing that I’m dealing with.”

The Buffs will wear a special patch throughout the upcoming season to honor Ponder following his death.
