Shedeur Sanders was the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback to end the 2025 season. But in 2026, he may not even be on the roster anymore.
A day after a 5-12 win at the Cincinnati Bengals, general manager Andrew Berry held his concluding press conference. When asked about Sanders’ progress, he said he saw “a lot” despite being “a work in progress”:
“I think we saw some really good things in terms of his playmaking, his accuracy, his ability to extend with his feet. And I think I’d also give him credit, as well as our offensive staff, for bringing him along in terms of his pocket management, his situational awareness and things of that nature.”
However, Berry was noncommittal about his place in the roster in the wake of Kevin Stefanski’s removal from the head coaching position:

“We’re going to do our work on the quarterback market. It’s too important of a position, and it’s something that has to be solidified. I can’t sit here and tell you today whether the solution for, or the starter in 2026, is internal or external. … And quite honestly, the new head coach will also have a lot of input into that as well.”
#Browns GM Andrew Berry said they will do work on quarterbacks this offseason because it’s a position that needs to be solidified. Berry said they saw a lot of progress from Shedeur Sanders, but he’s very much a work in progress (like all rookies). He can’t say right now ifInsider skeptical about Shedeur Sanders’ starting prospects for 2026 season
At least one person already has doubts about Shedeur Sanders’ viability as a long-term starter: Ken Carman. Speaking on his eponymous 92.3 The Fan show, he said:
“I think there is some good play that you can build off of. [But] I’m not convinced. I’m not convinced at all. I’m just trying to be as open-minded as I can. … When it comes to Shedeur, this was not a good football game for him. But I do think it can be a little bit better going into next year.”
He continued:
“He’s proven he’s come a long way he’s also proven he has a long way to go. There’s no way I’ll say it’s his team and that’s it for 2026… If it’s between him and Deshaun, I’d start Shedeur.”
In eight games, including seven starts, Sanders threw for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns against ten interceptions. He also rushed 21 times for another 169 yards and a score.
