“The reporter doesn’t deserve a Purple Heart”: Jason Whitlock makes feelings clear on Justin Herbert getting flak for Laura Rutledge interview

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert led the team to an impressive win against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday. However, the Chargers quarterback has been in the news for the wrong reasons.

Following the game, NFL reporter Laura Rutledge asked the Chargers quarterback for his interview. Herbert snubbed the reporter to celebrate the win with his teammates.

However, Rutledge persisted with her request and got the quarterback to answer a few questions. The quarterback’s antics has drawn criticism on social media and NFL analyst Jason Whitlock shared his thoughts on the incident.

While Whitlock felt Rutledge was “inconvenienced” after Herbert denied her initial request for an interview, the NFL analyst said “nothing happened”and people needed to stop talking about it on social media.

“This is the job. Nothing happened here. A reporter was temporarily (less than 2 seconds) inconvenienced. The reporter doesn’t deserve a Purple Heart. And people need to quit tweeting about this. Nothing happened.”

While Herbert wasn’t at his accurate best on the field, his discipline and tenacity helped the team overcome the defending champions in overtime.

Justin Herbert’s former Chargers teammate weighs in on sideline controversy

NFL players not wanting to talk to reporters immediately after the game is nothing new but Justin Herbert’s former Chargers teammate Chase Daniels feels it is “part of the job.”

“Coming from someone who played 14 years & with Justin…he has to understand that this is part of his job & not fight it regardless if you think it adds to the viewing experience or not (it does). @lauramrutledge did a fantastic job staying calm & simply explaining that she just wanted to talk to him really fast.”

The Chargers would hope that the controversy doesn’t distract the quarterback with the team facing a tough test in their remaining four games of the season. The win elevated the Chargers to a 9-4 record and they trail the Denver Broncos (11-2) at the top of the AFC West.
