Veteran quarterback Carson Wentz has been linked with the New York Jets this offseason. This started to pick up steam after NFL reporter Connor Hughes tweeted that the team’s new offensive coordinator, Frank Reich, prefers the Pro Bowler over other options.
“Wentz might surprise some, because of the notion that Frank Reich/ Wentz relationship fell apart in Indianapolis. From my understanding, that was more GM/owner, not coach. The two remain very close. One souce told me that the QB Reich prefers is Wentz,” Hughes wrote.
NFL analyst Craig Carton went guns blazing on Frank Reich for reportedly preferring Carson Wentz as his quarterback for the upcoming season. On Friday’s episode of the WFAN Sports Radio show, he did not mince his words when criticizing the Jets offensive coordinator and his decision.
“This is why Frank Reich got fired in Indianapolis,” Carton said. “This is why Frank Reich had to go to college to keep a job. Because he’s got this crazy connection with Carson freaking Wentz. And nobody wants Carson Wentz to be their starting quarterback. I’m not even sure if anybody wants Carson Wentz to be their backup quarterback.

“Wentz is not the answer. … I speak on behalf of every Jet fan alive today, if you sell us that Wentz is our starting quarterback, then you might as well just tell me that the plan is to go 0-17 and get a quarterback in next year’s draft.”
Wentz played under Frank Reich during the 2021 season when he was the coach of the Indianapolis Colts from 2018 to 2022. That season, the team finished second in the AFC South with a 9-8 record and no playoff appearance.
Last season, the Jets had Justin Fields as their quarterback. However, his performance was underwhelming, recording just 1,259 yards and seven TDs passing in nine games before being benched for Tyrod Taylor. They finished dead last in the AFC East with a 3-14 record.

Who did Carson Wentz play for during the 2025 season?
After his stint with the Indianapolis Colts, Carson Wentz spent one season each with the Commanders, Rams and the Chiefs. In August, the Minnesota Vikings signed him as the backup to J.J. McCarthy.
Wentz started in five games after McCarthy went down with an injury. He recorded 1,216 yards and six TDs passing. However, his campaign was cut short after suffering a season-ending shoulder injury against the Chargers in October.
The Vikings ended the season third in the NFC North with a 9-8 record, failing to qualify for the playoffs.
