Max Homa revealed a comment from Tiger Woods that has stayed with him, describing how the 15-time Major winner once told him he should have achieved more in his career.
Homa, part of Woods’ Jupiter Links team in TGL, spoke about his growing equation with Woods during an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show.” While Woods has not played this season, he has remained involved with the team as a mentor.
When asked if Woods gives him advice, Homa said their conversations have changed over time and are not always about golf.
“Yeah, he’s been great, but it’s interesting that in the beginning of kind of our friendship, I used to pick his brain a lot more… And then over time, you realize that there’s some things that he’s just got magic with… and then there’s other things where it’s just it’s cooler just at times to, you know, talk to him about the Dodgers or football or, you know, family life and all that. But he’s been great,” Homa said.
He then recalled a moment from the 2022 Open Championship at St Andrews where Woods said something that stuck with him.
“I honestly think his best advice wasn’t really anything I asked, but we were playing the Open Championship at St Andrews… he came up behind me, and he goes, ‘ How many times have you won out here?’ And he very seriously looked at me and said, ‘You know, it should be a lot more,’” he continued.
Homa said the comment stayed with him, especially because of its directness.
“I was like, ‘All right, I’m gonna remember that one because there’s a few things that I could be winning more.’ It was a really cool thing and also in a very Tiger way, you know, very, very, very sincerely and aggressively told me I am underachieving. And I’ve dealt with it since then,” Max Homa added.
That week at St Andrews, Max Homa played the first two rounds with Woods and Matt Fitzpatrick, but missed the cut by one shot. Woods also did not make it through to the weekend.
Meanwhile, Woods is away from regular competition. He has not played since The Open Championship at Royal Troon in 2024, and is still recovering after his disc replacement surgery in October 2025.
Max Homa on what it’s like playing alongside Tiger Woods
Max Homa has had a few chances to share the course with Tiger Woods, and those moments have left a strong impression on him.
At the 2024 Masters, the two were paired together, giving Homa a close look at Woods. Speaking after his round on Friday, he said the experience was difficult to describe, mainly because of the atmosphere around Woods.
“It’s hard to put into words,” Homa said. “You feel the crowd on every shot. At times, I just look over and enjoy myself as a fan. He’s swinging it great. He looks so much better. It’s just awesome to watch.”
He added that playing alongside Woods at Augusta was something he had always imagined, and it lived up to that.
“It was awesome, man. It was just a dream to get to play with him here. You know, I’ve been saying I’ve always wanted to just watch him hit iron shots around here and I was just right up next to them. It was really cool,” he added.
The respect goes both ways. During the 2025 John Deere Classic, the PGA Tour shared a clip of Max Homa’s swing, which received a comment from Woods.
“I like his move… he’s got a little cast at the top,” Woods wrote.
Max Homa is set to make his seventh Masters appearance in 2026. He has been consistent at Augusta in recent years, finishing inside the top 12 in each of the past two editions, including a tie for third in 2024, his best result at a Major. Woods’ status for this year’s Masters is still uncertain, but Homa will be part of the field once again.
