Coming off the best season of his career, Tommy Fleetwood looks incredibly likely to contend for a major championship next season.
Tommy Fleetwood took his first PGA Tour win at the Tour Championship and was banging on the door throughout the year.
He showed remarkable resilience after a heartbreaking loss to Keegan Bradley at the Travelers, and his ability to continually put his name at the top of the leaderboard is a testament to his talent.
Fleetwood also formed a historic partnership with Rory McIlroy for the second-straight Ryder Cup, and played an instrumental role in Europe’s victory. In 2025, the Englishman established himself as one of the sport’s top talents.
He’ll be among the favourites at Augusta National and The Open Championship, two tournaments that should suit his game. And he once revealed which of those prestigious majors he would rather win.
Tommy Fleetwood said he would rather win The Open Championship over The Masters
While winning a Green Jacket at Augusta National is seen as the greatest achievement in golf, Fleetwood said he’d rather win his home major at The Open than win The Masters.
Speaking on the Meandmygolf YouTube Channel, Fleetwood was asked which major he would rather win, and said, “The Open. It’s not even close.
“I would rather win The Open at Birkdale than I would at St Andrews, I think, just for being at home, really. Although I’m not going to be picky on the venue.
“But yeah, The Open and then The Masters would be the second for sure. But I think it’s gotta be The Open. The Open’s just amazing, isn’t it?”
Fleetwood won the DP World India Championship recently, and he compared the New Delhi course to Augusta National with its tree-lined fairways.
His elite shot shaping and accurate iron play should be suited ideally to the course, making him one of the favourites going into The Masters.
However, he has clearly laid out which major he wants to win and where he wants to win it. And 2026 presents Fleetwood with a golden opportunity.
Tommy Fleetwood can fulfil his home course dream in 2026
Fleetwood said he’d rather win at his home course, Royal Birkdale, than on the Old Course at St Andrews. The Southport-born golfer will be heading home this season with the hopes of doing exactly that.
The Open comes to Birkdale next year, as the iconic Southport links will stage its 11th major.
Justin Thomas emerged the victor last time The Open was played at Fleetwood’s home course in 2017, nine years after Padraig Harrington claimed his second-straight Claret Jug there.
Birkdale requires accuracy and course management, demanding precise shots off the tee and on approach. When Fleetwood is at his best, the course will play to his strengths, giving him a priceless chance to achieve his dream of winning The Open on his doorstep.
