Vijay Singh was remarkable with his game at this week’s PGA Tour event in Hawaii. The Fijian golfer teed off this week in the season-opening event, the Sony Open in Hawaii, and made the cut after two rounds. He became the oldest golfer since Fred Couples in 2023 to make the cut at the Tour event.
The 62-year-old golfer had a remarkable start to the game this week, and after two rounds, he settled with a score of 2-under. The cutline was 1-under.
The PGA Tour shared the stats about Vijay Singh after he made the cut on its X (formerly Twitter) account with a caption:
“Vijay Singh, 62, has made the cut @SonyOpenHawaii in a *fourth* different decade. He’s the oldest to make a cut on TOUR since Fred Couples at the 2023 Masters.”
Notably, Vijay Singh started his campaign with an opening round of 68. He maintained the momentum but had a few hiccups in the second round on Friday.
He made three birdies and three bogeys for even-par 70 and slipped down six spots on the leaderboard to settle in a tie for 47th place. However, he still managed to make the cut and will play in the final two rounds over the weekend.
Vijay Singh celebrates Sony Open success with a lighthearted message
Vijay Singh is gearing up for the final two rounds at the Sony Open in Hawaii. He shared a few pictures of his outing on his Instagram account on Friday with a humorous caption.
“When they say 62 is too old to compete with the kids 😮💨 Let’s get the weekend rolling @sonyopenhawaii,” he wrote.
Notably, Davis Riley took the lead in the game after two rounds at the Sony Open in Hawaii in a tie with S.H. Kim, Adrien Dumont de Chassart, Nick Taylor, and Kevin Roy. Riley played a round of 64 on Friday and jumped 28 spots on the leaderboard.
In the post-round press conference, he talked about his performance and said (via ASAP Sports):
“Definitely today I putted really well, but I definitely hit the ball a little bit better today. It maybe wasn’t even better, I just didn’t have as many crazy shots as yesterday.
“I had a penalty stroke off the tee yesterday which really cost me and felt like I lost a lot of momentum there. Overall the ball striking was a little cleaner and continued some of that good putting,” he added.
The third round of the 2026 Sony Open in Hawaii is scheduled for Saturday, January 17. Play will start at 12:10 p.m. EST. Vijay Singh will start the third round at 1:55 p.m. ET in a group with Zach Johnson.
