John Harbaugh has a new team to lead in the 2026 season, and Donald Trump cannot be any more excited about it.
Last Saturday, the New York Giants were announced to have hired the former Baltimore Ravens strategist as their new head coach. Reacting to the development late Monday night as he was leaving the College Football Playoff championship game, the US President said:
“(Harbaugh)’s a great coach, and he’s gonna do well with the Giants, just like his brother (Jim) does so well (with the Los Angeles Chargers). They got something very special in their blood. And I’m happy for the Giants.”

During his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Harbaugh was asked about the endorsement. He said:
“It feels really great.”
The hiring is something that Trump has been urging ever since Harbaugh was fired by the Ravens two days after the end of the regular season. On January 7, a mere day after the firing, he pleaded to teams on his Truth Social website:
“HIRE JOHN HARBAUGH, FAST.”
He then zeroed in on the Giants three days later:
“The New York Football Giants should hire, without question, John Harbaugh – And John, a great guy, should TAKE THE JOB!!!”
John Harbaugh reflects on position within Giants’ hierarchy
With the Giants, John Harbaugh will follow a hierarchical structure that differs from what the franchise typically does. Instead of reporting to general manager Joe Schoen, he will report directly to ownership.
When asked about this arrangement, he said:
“To me, it’s really not that important in the big picture, in the big scheme of things. I think it’s kind of overblown in terms of how it works,But the main thing is that it works and we work together. That’s kind of what I was used to and it felt like a good way to start off. I think we’re all going to work together.”
He also assured:
“We all report to the boss. And the boss is ownership.”
The new league year commences on March 11.
