What Butch Harmon and Brandel Chamblee predicted Tiger Woods would do before he won The Masters in 2019

Tiger Woods’ win at The Masters in 2019 is arguably one of golf’s greatest ever stories.

Woods had wrapped up 14 major wins in just over a decade by the time he won the US Open in 2008 and with Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 firmly in sight, it looked a sure thing.

In a twist of fate, though, injuries and off course struggles seriously halted Woods in his tracks and while he did win plenty of tournaments and big events from 2008 onwards, those major wins eluded him.

In fact, Woods won consistently up until 2013 before a barren period saw him fail to register another victory right up until he won the TOUR Championship out of nowhere in 2018.

With that win, excitement was building and ahead of the 2019 season, predictions about Woods were rife.

Indeed, with Woods winning The Masters in ’19 to complete the mother of all comebacks, it’s worth looking back at what some of the game’s top minds predicted for Tiger at the time.

What Butch Harmon and Brandel Chamblee predicted for Tiger Woods in 2019

Whenever Tiger Woods sets foot on a golf course nowadays it gets people talking so when he won in 2018 after an injury free season, the anticipation was high for 2019.

As we know, Butch Harmon played a key role in Tiger’s success and at the time in 2018, Harmon rightfully predicted that a major could be won.

“I think Tiger will win in 2019, maybe multiple times, depending on his schedule,” Harmon said.

“I’m excited to see what he can do and how much he plays. Three of the majors are at courses where he’s won before—Pebble, Bethpage and Augusta—which bodes well for him. But it’s going to be tough for him to win a major; it’s tough for anybody to win one. I hope he proves me wrong. I think it would be the greatest thing for our game.”

Adding further weight to the predictions conversation, golf analyst Brandel Chamblee also predicted success for Woods, albeit not quite to major level.

“The big question for 2019 is will Tiger play like he did winning the Tour Championship in 2018. If he does, anything is possible, including breaking Snead’s all-time wins record and winning another major. More likely his driver and putter will hold him back, but he remains almost peerless with his irons.”

In the end, Woods won the Masters and then sealed The ZOZO Championship in October the same year.

That would be the last time we saw Woods win and ultimately, is likely to be the last time we witness a victory given his current injury status.

What Hank Haney predicted for Tiger Woods in 2019

As well as Butch Harmon, another man who has played a key role in Woods’ career is his former coach, Hank Haney.

Haney has always spoken so highly of Woods and does so right up to the present day.

However, at the time, his prediction was a bit far off, although he did suggest Woods would win at least one major.

“Everything I’ve seen from Tiger tells me he’s going to win more this year. I think he gets back to No. 1 in the world,” Haney predicted in 2018.

Looking back, it seems a shame we only saw Tiger win twice in ’19 and the icing on the cake would have been taking Sam Snead’s record.

For now, that record looks secure but if there’s one man who can surprise everyone in golf, then it’s Tiger Woods.

Don’t count the great man out just yet.
