Justin Thomas is planning for his return on the PGA Tour at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. The American golfer has been away from the field since his last outing in November at the Procore Championship.
Thomas underwent surgery in November and has since been focused on his recovery and staying away from the greens. He returned to play this week at the TGL series.
On Monday, the two-time major winner played against Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf Club, and in the post-round press conference, he talked about his possible return to the greens.
Justin Thomas will play in the signature event next week, which runs from March 5 to 8 at the Bay Hill Club. He opened up about his decision to choose the Arnold Palmer Invitational for his return to the PGA Tour.
“A course really like any is the adjustment,” Thomas said. “But I would say it’ll just be a lot of little stuff. I’ve been able to practice pretty normal for at least a month I feel like, or maybe not quite that much, so I’m trying to play a lot more, but I’ll still run into stuff here and there of just situations I haven’t been in in a while.
“It was my first time playing, hitting it in a fairway bunker, and I’m like, I haven’t hit a fairway bunker shot in like four months or something like that. Just trying to play and get out there as often as I can. Different winds, different grasses, different lies, different scenarios,” he added.
In his last outing at the Procore Championship, Justin Thomas carded rounds of 72, 70, 72, and 75 and settled in solo 69th place. Last year at the Arnold Palmer Invitational, he carded rounds of 71, 70, 74, and 76 to tie for 36th place. It will be interesting to see how things unfold for him after his return to the greens following five months hiatus.
Justin Thomas opens up about his team’s performance in TGL
Justin Thomas’ TGL team, Atlanta Drive GC, defeated Boston Common Golf Club on Monday. He joined his teammates Patrick Cantlay and Chris Gotterup to play in the game, and in the post-round press conference, he opened up about his team’s performance in the game. He said:
“A win is a win. I’ve obviously watched a lot more this year as opposed to playing, so I’ve found that from watching, it seems like it’s harder to make birdies. The holes may be a little longer. There’s a little bit more going on, and the green is, at least from the one match I’ve played, is difficult to putt on.
“It’s got a lot of break and very speedy. May not have as many birdies as last year, but that being said, someone has still got to win the match and win the holes. The fact that we were able to do that, that’s all that matters,” he added.
Atlanta Drive GC has won three matchups so far this season in the TGL.
