Who is Ryo Hisatsune? Japanese golfer’s career earnings and achievements explored

PGA: Wyndham Championship - Third Round - Source: Imagn

Ryo Hisatsune has continued his good start to the season for yet another week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The Japanese golfer carded a 5-under 67 in the second round to aggregate at 15-under and take the 36-hole joint lead at Pebble Beach.

Born on September 9, 2002, in Okayama, Japan, Hisatsune began playing golf at just three years old after his father first took him to a driving range. He quickly developed an interest in the game and idolized the likes of Ryo Ishikawa and Hideki Matsuyama while growing up.

Ryo Hisatsune represented his country in the mixed team golf event alongside Kagetsu Tsuruse at the Buenos Aires Summer Youth Olympics 2018. After turning pro in 2020, he competed on the Japan Challenge Tour and claimed three wins in a year, then earned a spot on the Japan Golf Tour.

Hisatsune made his first start on the PGA Tour at the ZOZO Championship 2021, where he tied for 52nd. However, his better performance came at the Australian PGA Championship 2022, where he finished as joint runner-up.

A few months later, Ryo Hisatsune beat Jordan Smith and Jeff Winther by a two-stroke margin to claim the DP World Tour’s Open de France. Seven more top-ten finishes helped him earn the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award. For the uninitiated, he is the first and only Japanese player to receive this honor.

After finishing 17th in the 2023 Race to Dubai Rankings, Hisatsune earned his PGA Tour card and debuted at the Sony Open in Hawaii. The promising star had a decent T30 finish in Hawaii. He made his major debut at the Masters and missed the cut but made a T18 finish at the PGA Championship. However, he also failed to make it to the weekend at The Open Championship.

Ryo Hisatsune received his career-best ranking of 72nd in January 2024 and is currently ranked 78th. Last year, he was caught in a controversy at the Crown Australian Open 2025 after he dropped his club on his ball and thus received a one-stroke penalty.
