Calvin Johnson is one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history, being a Hall of Famer and holding multiple records, including the most receiving yards in a single season at 1,964 in 2012. And he did so while stoned.
On Wednesday, the Detroit Lions legend made an appearance on Amon-Ra and Equanimeous St. Brown’s eponymous podcast. During the episode, he revealed that he would take cannabis “a handful of times” during his career to alleviate the pain that came with playing:
“You can only be so faded because, like, how work was, like, there were some games, like, towards the end of my career. I didn’t do it towards the end of my career, because I was at this point where I was like, ‘Man, I don’t know how to help me get through this game today. Lord, help me guide my feet. I don’t know how I’m getting to this game.'”
He continued:

“And I’ll just be like, ‘You know what? I’m gonna spark this thing up.’ … And the funny thing is, more times than not, I had a good game too.”
Calvin Johnson predicts former teammate Matthew Stafford winning 2025 NFL MVP
In the same podcast appearance, Calvin Johnson shared his thoughts on the MVP race.
The frontrunners for the award are the Los Angeles Rams’ Matthew Stafford, who had the most passing yards and touchdowns for the first time in his career; and the New England Patriots’ Drake Maye, who led the league in completion percentage and passer rating as part of a second-year breakout.
And Johnson went with his former teammate (starts at 36:22 and resumes at 37:15 in the video below):
“I gotta give it to my guy Matthew. … Matthew’s playing so great right now. Let’s go ahead and see if he can pad on his legacy and solidify his status in the Hall (of Fame).”
He continued (at 39:18):
“I expect him and Puka (Nacua) to have a big playoffs, and Davante (Adams is) coming back. … It’s going to be scary over there in LA.”
